Pop-Expressionism

You don't need fancy equipment to make art. This project was in conjunction with the multi-talented Little Harlequin.

I was a student living in Cape Town. We wanted to do a shoot but the weather was being a bit unpredictable so, she came on over with some paint and we developed a new plan.

While she body painted herself on the living room floor of my tiny student apartment, I hung a purple throw, from the couch, over the washing line outside. I pegged a white sheet across the top to act as a silk. We painted the sticks from a broken blind and stuck it in her hair. We had to crouch the whole shoot which was good exercise and a laugh. I used a 24mm-135mm lens. No addional lighting used, just pure sunlight. Almost no editing was done.

We decided to call the shoot Pop-Expressionism because we were inspired by the both pop-art and the expressionist art eras.

I would like to state first up:

I love the human form. I love photographying nudity respectfully. I respect people who want to look good and feel good. I believe that it is important to educate youth to appreciate our bodies and a healthy lifestyle. I have no problem with media using beautiful people and I created this metaphorical shoot with fun in mind.

Homage to the 50's pin-up girl era and the objectification of the women. Tasty morsels to be looked at and wanted.

Don't be afraid of feeling sexy. Set your own boundaries and stand up for yourself.

Is This Mars & Survivor

Two shoots, taken years apart. The Mars shoot was in Cape Town and I had made this silk kimono on my winter break. So it was just a fun shoot about making another world.

Survivor was inspired by someone I met who was a weapons collector. Using his old army attire and a collection of his weapons, we set out into the fields.
